originally I tried to stand to the left of Bizza...I always do by best to let my homies shine...so I always try to play the back or the side when on stage or press shoots.....but this time the photographer told me to get in the center.....so I hunched down as much as possible....

Sup y'aaallll.......
...I cried on monday.
...due to internal conflicts that have nothing to do with the music....Dragons of Zynth have kicked me out of the band at a Zenith of sorts.....Summerstage was great...thanx to all who attended....

....to put it in perspective.
...For the past year, I've have given 10000% to my fellow Dragons.......I provided a place live for two of them....a rehersal space.......food....transportation.......the current avatar...videos....design....energy.....light...wisdom....and numerous recordings both digital and film...........and most importantly I gave my brothers my community. I'm deeply hurt about what's happened......yet I am still a Dragon...there are a lot of us.....more than just the five in the picture..........We are Fire breathing Flying seeing....a Voltron behemoth....out of the chaos fire and confusion.... Raedawn Phoenix has been born..........I am here to wish my 3 brothers who are currently opposed to me the best future in this world......Since I know that their decision spawned from confusion.....I pray the Goddess can bring us together again....."

After looking back at my trip to Austin for SXSW, there were some super stand-out artists and events that really needed a boost. Over the next few days, we'll be turning you guys on to stuff we think you should know about. Here are highlights from the Hot Flash! camp.

SKY HY

I got a chance to check out Sky HY (aka Joseph Hale), at one of Teleport Door's many showcases around SXSW. From the fertile creative grounds of Atlanta, Sky Hy plays what can be described as “Afro-punk electro soul.” Along with fellow Atlanta native producer Chris Brann, who's known for his classic hip hop, booty-shakin’ funk-rock, sun-splashed cosmic soul and gritty, bass-heavy club beats. Live, Sky Hy is something to behold. The high-energy, kinetic performance simply kills it. It's one-part punk show, one-part dance party and one part hip-hop throw down mixed with a stage show that would give P-funk a run for their money.

With his upcoming forthcoming 12” single release “Head Between The Speakers” coming out on KID Recordings (featuring remixes from Radio 4, Tommie Sunshine and Megablast), Sky Hy is poised to unleash the goodness on the world in the near future.

7 Questions with the Bullets

When I started to investigate the Bullets (formerly know as the Rubber Bullets), I started to look at the details of these 2 exceptionally talented musicians. There indiviual musical careers are the stuff of legend. Ris Paul Ric (aka Chris Richards) was the guitar player and vocalist for legendary DC-area post-punk group Q and Not U (Discord Records). After the demise of Q and not U, Ris went on to produce a solo record, recording with ambient idm wonderkid Tim Hecker. Dave Nada's background is just as diverse. Dave played guitar in hardcore bands (including Medic) for 10 years before getting into dance music.

The Bullets are known for their monthly party, "Crowd Control" happening at DC9 in Washington DC, as well as thier eclectic style. In any given set you can hear the dropping hip-hop, sampling Nation of Ulysses alongside D.C. with go-go classics and Baltimore club beats. I had to wonder what happened to get thse guys, for all accounts dudes with a DC Hardcore pedigree, into making slammin' dance floor fillers?

(RIS WITH Q AND NOT U)

HF!: How do you guys end up working togther?

DAVE: We met in the pit. No, on the dancefloor. Nah, we've had mutual friends for a long time, but we didn't start kickin it until Ris starting coming out to some of my parties. Last year he was looking for a singer to start an r&b crossover band. He ended up asking me if I wanted in, and I was feeling the idea big time. So then we started working on songs, learning how to make beats, and searching for our buffalo stance diva.

HF!: As far as influences, who have inspired you guys to do this project?

DAVE: Chris has been an influence on me actually. I respect his grind and love for the game. If you want names and things then I can go on for days....James Brown, prince, H.R., Chuck D, Sam Cooke, Fela, Kathleen Hannah, D.C., West Baltimore, my girl, my moms, my block, etc.

RIS: I also think we both wanted to do this after going to a million hot dance nights and seeing a million stank live bands.

(DAVE NADA ON CROWD CONTROL)

HF! You both have a background that's somwhat intertwined with the DC Hardcore scene, Chris with Q and Not U and Dave with Medic (among other bands). How would each of you explain how two guys who emerged from the DC Punk scene ended up making Club music?

DAVE: Well, I grew up with 4 brothers and like 20 cousins. Huge family, so I was always into all kinds of crazy shit. Hardcore punk was my thing so I started doing bands. I got really into hip-hop and house music during my college years, so that's when I started djing. My grind was so focused that i eventually graduated from college and become a full time club dj. I was still doing hardcore punk bands, and I loved it, but my DJ career was taking over, so I had to make some big moves. As a working DJ, you eventually wanna start making your own tracks to tear the club up, so I jumped into the production game.

RIS: As far as transitioning from punk to club music, I think they're both really physical musics and the idea of hard, visceral music is real attractive to me right now. These days, everyone's going numb-dumb on their iPods and shit, so we want to make music that breathes heavy.

HF!: What connection, if any, do you see between what's happening in the Baltimore Club scene and the DC Hardcore scene?

DAVE: Both are really fast and aggressive? Ha ha. There's isn't any connection between the two scenes. We just happen to be punk rock cats who love to get freaky in club.

RIS: No connection whatsoever. I used to listen to [influential b-more club music station] 92Q on the way to band practice, and that's about it.

HF!: I know you have a mixtape out there, could you talk a little bit about that?

DAVE: The mixtape is called Crowd Control vol.1. That shit is sold out. We made that mix to put ourselves and the cities we love (dc/bmore) on blast. It has some blends, and original remixes, as well as harder edge tunes we love. We now have a monthly party in D.C. called Crowd Control that's goin down every 1st thursday of each month at DC9 nightclub. It's gonna be real crazy. Our singer/front woman Rah is gonna host it as well. Oh, and expect CC Vol.2 this summer!

HF!: I've seen that you're planning on putting togther a live touring band. Could you tell me a little about that and what your live performance plans are?

DAVE: Bullets is the new band consisting of Ris, Rah and your boy. We plan on killing shit. You don't even know.

Once again back it's the inevitable

We're back for this month's installment of HOT FLASH! this Saturday, January 27th. Our first party was a total success (check the pics from last month's gig thanks to the Lek Brothers *HERE*) and we're ready to have the next event bump even harder. We survived the holidays, made it out to more than a couple of things since our last jump off, and have to say that Dallas is poppin' so hard right now it's not even funny.

The Central Booking guys have kept things blistering with their monthly, and bringing out Roxy "Oxy Cottontail" to fuck things up at Zubar, Neva Dug Disco has been on point with the regular Hip Hop nights at Minc, bringing out SCHWA to their last event, Cultura Fina launched their web site and Prince William has been on the grind as usual. 1. CENTRAL BOOKING

This crew has been at the forefront of the new, new stuff this year. DJ Naure, Select, Sober and the newest member, Austinite Klassen, have been ON BLAST this year. I met the crew after reading about Nature in the Observer early this year. I checked out on of his remixes online and promptly contacted him about playing on the bill for the Kid606 show I put togther in April. I went to Denton to check out "The Party," and was blown away by what he was playing. Since then, Nature and the CB crew can do no wrong. Nature has been producing the new Mima record and won DJ of the year in the Observer's "Best Of 2006," DJ Select's mixtape "She's a Receiver" hit the streets with with boom and Sober's Decade clothing is up and running with some of the freshest designs to come out of Dallas. Nice work.

2. We Shot JR

In a year where blogging made a serious impact on the Dallas music scene, We Shot JR lead the pack in terms of reporting on bands, show's and DJ's that normally would be overlooked by even the most "alternative" music media outlets. The anonymously published blog has given some amazing local talent a well-deserved boost, and has kept it's finger on the pulse of what the underground really cares about. If 2006 was any indication of what's to come in the future, then I'll bet some anonymous blogger will be quiting his day job very soon.

3. The Krispee Ones

The Krispee Ones, aka Prince William and Diggs, have been some busy guys in 2006. Producing Seeds of Concrete, Big Pharoah and Black Page, not to mention the killer instrumentals these guys have knocked out, TKO is on point. The momentum these guys have right now is crazy, and 2007 looks like the year they're set to pop-off.

4. Laptop Deathmatch

With Wanz Dover at the helm, the Laptop Deathmatch has been huge this year. Modeled after turntable battles, the monthly event has spawned some incredible local talent, as well as bring some well-established acts into the mix. From the pool of regulars at the event, The Dreamtigers, Convextion, Cygnus and Matthewmatics, just to name a few, have managed to get all kinds of momentum. 2007 looks like an even bigger year for the event, moving it from a geeky boys club to Dallas secne saver.

5. Art Prostitute

This one-time Denton institution has made it's way to big D with quite a splash. Their openings are something to behold. Having sometimes up to 600 visitors in one opening, the AP is breaking the mold on how art openings happen. They've broken the model, at least for the Dallas art scene, and the people couldn't be happier. They've featured some of most well-known street artists, local and national, and have been publishing their efforts for each and every show by way of their books. With their events featuring DJ's, local bands and always a colorful cast of people, AP has set the bar for what's possible in the Dallas art community.

6. P.E.G./Addikt/Eleven80 and the Dallas Streetware Blast

If you've seen some folks out in sneakers and gear that make you ask your self "where in the hell did they get those fly threads," chances are they got them at one of these stores. These guys carry one-of-a-kind gear that you can't find anywhere else in the metro. From short-run sneakers that look like something from outterspace, to hand-made T's, to crazy print hoodies, these guys represent the next-wave in street ware.

7. Cultura Fina

The CF crew are EVERYWHERE! These dudes have been in the mix all year, and they just don't stop. They're dropping knowlegde about what's good in the scene on their blog (http://www.culturafina.blogspot.com/), they just hosted the Nas/Ghostface relase party at Eleven80 and they're set to unleash their own gear in '07' Their slogan says it all. Follow The Leader.

8. Avenue Arts Venue

Eddie Ruiz (no relation), owner and operator of AAV, has managed to get some of the best parties in Dallas at his unique venue. On any given weekend he host's parties from the The Lollipop Shoppe, The Smoke, The Melissas, High Society and more. As one of the ONLY after-hours not hosted in a strp club, Eddie has carved out a niche in Dallas nightlife that's totally his own. His concern with asthetic detail is only matched by the calaber of talent he brings in.

10. The Convergence of Scenes

2006 was the year that world's collided in Dallas! Indie kids, hip-hop heads, punk rockers and club scenesters could be seen everywhere rubbing shoulders and exchanging ideas. It's way over due and it's an awesome thing. The possibilites right now seem limitless, and in no small part it's because of the people mentioned above. Personally, I'd like to thank each and everyone mentioned for looking beyond their own scene and reaching out to other folks. This is just the begining of what's to come and the reason I've decided to make Dallas my home for the forseeable future.

I just found out (via We Shot JR) that Best Fwends, who's Spank Rock mix is being release on Big Dada will be playing in Ft. Worth tonight at 1919 Hemphill!

Thanksgiving Chaos

So, I made a run to Oklahoma City to see family and do the Thanksgiving thing. I went down Wednesday and met up with a friend Zena, who I havn't seen in 15 YEARS!!!

Now, we were going to meet up for coffee, but by the time I got into town, most places were closed down for the bird thing. We ended up at the Electro Lounge, where as it turns out, my homies Ed Crunk, John and Joshua are now doing their weekly party "Dance Robot Dance."

So, not only did I get to catch up with Zena (who looks STUNNING and is awesome), I got to catch up with the Robot crew! Unexpected and completely cool, although I had to call it a night hella early to kick it with the fam.

So....Thankgiving day was really good. Hung out with the family, ate WAY too much and come 6:30 PM, I jetted off from Oklahoma City back to Dallas to play a gig at the Cavern with Farah Holly and Tiger...(tiger is fucking awesome, btw)

Farah's set was AMAZING, like Adult. meets Blonde with Erase Erada on board. She's recording with one of the guys from Glass Candy and she's on point in so many different ways.

She introduced me to her friend Potsie, who's in the Polyphonic Spree and we talked about maybe working togther on some music.

It was a fun night to play to a small, but enthusiastic crowd. It's great meeting people involved in cool shit in this town. Anyway, I'm fucking beat, but in a good mood. The last 48 hours have beeen a bit of a blur, and I have to say it's good to be home in Dallas.

Now, you KNOW what's coming next.....HOT FLASH!. We're in full-throtle get in the mix mode right now. We're going to be debuting the party on Saturday, December 16th at the FALLOUT LOUNGE on Expo. It's free party and we're planning on getting up on the new-new shit and getting some surprises for all you guys....

If there's something you want, just let us know. We're here for the kids.
